5-3. Bidirectional Communication

5-3-1. What Is Bidirectional Communication?

Bidirectional communication automatically sets up installed options and paper settings to make the

driver ready to use. The driver sends an SNMP query to the printer and gets a reply from the printer

that includes the necessary information to automatically configure the settings:

 Paper

o Paper sizes in the trays

o Installed trays

 Accessories

o Installed options

 Job Types

o Supported job types

 Color/B&W

o Type of device (black & white or color)

5-3-2. Supported Ports

Ports that support bidirectional communication:

 Standard TCP/IP port

o The SNMP community name used by standard TCP/IP ports is “public” but can be

changed.

 Novel iPrint Server port

o Printer Driver for Universal Print v3.5.0.0 or later only

o If using v3.5.0.0, the SNMP community name should be “public”.

o If using v3.6.0.0 or later, the SNMP community name can be changed as long as the

Novel iPrint client is v5.60 or later.

5-3-3. When Bidirectional Communication Will Occur

v3.13.0.0 and earlier

 After Printer Properties or Printing Preferences is opened.

 After the Update Now button in the Accessories tab is clicked.

v4.0.0.0 and later

 After Printer Properties is opened.

 After the Update Now button in the Accessories tab is clicked.
